Coconut birdfeeder

Every now and then we get coconuts...i don't really know why we buy them or recieve them as gifts...maybe because we talk often about sailing to Pacific islands and they are sort of reminders of this distand sea...well, i have finaly found a way to put
those empty shells to use...

The Coconut Birdfeeder Tutorial

Materials needed:
a coconut, hemp cord cca. 2.5m, glass or plastic beads, marker, handsaw, drill

With handsaw cut an opening (cut no more then 1/5 of whole nut or else the hole will be too big and it'll alowe rain and snow inside)and chisel out the white coconut meat with a spoon and knife. This can be later peeled with potato peeler, cut in bite size pieces and enjoyed as a snack or you can shred it and feed it to birds, they love it!

Mark three holes (diameter no more then 4mm / 0,16 Inch) on the top and one hole on the bottom of coconut(this hole is for drainage, diameter no more then 4mm or else the seeds will fall out). Carefully and slowly drill the holes. Coconuts are prone to crack and breaking under pressure, therefor be sure to have drill speed on slow!

Cut cord in 3 pieces cca.70cm /27Inch long and thread them through holes from outside in.

Make a figure 8 knot  or any other knot big enough to prevent the cord sliding out through the hole). Repeat with other 2 cords.

Gather all 3 cords and level them so that the opening in coconut is as horizontal as possible. Make an overhand knot.

Add a bead or two, make some macramee knots, decorate as you please (but nothing tooshiney or it'll scare the birds off)...make another overhand knot and the coconut bird feeder is ready!

And here it is in action:
Laaanding!
